The No. 22 ranked Raven Men's basketball team continues its clutch, late-game performance, this time leading to a 76-73 win over Peru State College on Wednesday.
Austin Eckert led the way for the Ravens with 17 points, as he anchored a bench-scoring effort for the Ravens that outscored the Bobcats 28-5. John Harris Jr. and Jake Schannuth followed close behind with 16 points each as the the trio accounted for 11 of Benedictine's 13 3-pointers.
Benedictine (5-0, 1-0 Heart) and Peru State (2-5, 0-1 Heart) battled through 13 lead changes throughout the game. With just over 14 minutes remaining in the 2nd half, Eckert stole the ball from the Bobcats' Corday Sims and buried a shot from beyond the arc to give the Ravens a 50-49 lead.
Peru State clawed its way back however, outscoring the Ravens 11-2 over a four minute period late in the game, pushing the game to its fifth tie with two minutes remaining. Schannuth answered the run, draining one of his two 3-pointers to give Benedictine back the lead with 1:42 remaining. Peru State pulled back with in two inside the final minute only to have Harris Jr. put the finishing touches on the game, adding his last two points with 27 seconds left.
Benedictine battled back and forth throughout the 1st half, holding onto a slim 3 point advantage going into the break and shooting 46.9 percent. They finished the game at 47.5 percent from the field, hitting 50 percent from deep. Four of Eckhert's five 3-pointers came in the second half as his efforts combined with 16 points off turnovers for the Ravens helped push Benedictine to a conference-opening win.
The Ravens hit the road, traveling to Culver-Stockton College (3-3, 1-0 Heart) to continue conference play. Tip-off set for 4:00 p.m. in Canton, Mo., and can be heard live on KAIR FM locally in Atchison and over the internet at www.ravenathletics.com.
