The Raven Men's Basketball team battled through nine ties and 13 lead changes on Saturday against Evangel University before pulling away for a 83-72 win to open up 2016 on Saturday.
Benedictine (9-3, 2-3 Heart) held Evangel (2-11, 1-4 Heart) scoreless from beyond the arc in the second half to earn the win. The Crusaders went 0 for 16 in the second half from beyond the arc as the Ravens limited them to just 13.0 percent 3-point effort on the day.
Neither team was able to create any distance on the score board in the first half as they each hit over 40 percent from the floor sending the game into halftime tied at 32.
After exchanging baskets to start off the second half, Jake Schannuth hit a 3-pointer off an assist from CJ Vallejo to push Benedictine in front, 39-38, with 17 minutes remaining. It was a lead the Ravens never gave up.
The 3-pointer from Schannuth started a 16-8 run by the Ravens that allowed Benedictine to pull ahead by 11 points.
The Crusaders were able to close within eight points twice over the final 10 minutes of the game but couldn't get any closer than that as they Ravens maintaining a double figure lead for the final 90 seconds of the game.
For the Ravens, the 83-point total was a new season high as they earned their third straight win over the Crusaders.
John Harris Jr., led all scores with 22 points as Benedictine finished with four players in double figures. Schannuth finished with 13 points while Vallejo and Shawn Fleming Jr., each added 11 points.
After converting on 72.7 percent from the floor in the second half, the Ravens finished the game at 53.8 percent.
The Ravens remain at home for a 7:30 p.m. game on Wednesday as they host conference opponent Graceland University.
