PERU, Neb. – Wednesday night's match up between the Raven Men's Basketball team and No. 21 Peru State College was a game of runs.
Trailing by 20 points with 11:40 left in the game Benedictine (12-7, 6-7 Heart) outscored Peru State (13-7, 10-3 Heart) 31-17 over the next 10 minutes of play to pull within one point, 81-80, only to have the Bobcats hold of the Ravens in the final 90 seconds of play to escape with a 87-80 win.
Peru State forced Benedictine into 13 turnovers, which the Bobcats turned directly into 17 points and allowed Peru State to keep the Ravens at arm's length throughout the game.
After matching field goals early in the game, the Bobcats took the lead over inside the three minutes of the game building as much as a 14 points lead over the Ravens before Benedictine was able to pull within seven late. The Ravens gave up a last-second 3-pointer that pushed their deficit back to double figures, 43-33, at halftime.
Benedictine started off the second half with a run of their own as they quickly cut their deficit to three points, 43-40 inside the first two minutes of half.
From their, the Bobcats limited the Ravens to just eight points over the next seven minutes as they outscored Benedictine 24-8 to building their largest lead of the night.
The Ravens comeback effort was fueled by CJ Vallejo and Shawn Fleming Jr. At the half, Fleming had five points while he finished with a team-high 19 points. Vallejo scored six points in the first half and finished on the heels of Fleming Jr., with 18 points. He finished at 6 of 8 from beyond the arc as they Ravens converted on 58.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc in the second half.
The Ravens remain on the road Saturday, traveling to Olathe to take on No. 23 MNU at 4 p.m. MNU held off the Ravens in the first match up of the season back on Dec. 5, 70-66, inside the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium.
