MARSHALL, Mo. – The Raven Wrestling team competed in the NAIA Central Region Qualifier on Saturday with a berth to the NAIA National Championships on the line.
Benedictine finished with four wrestlers in the top six in their respective weight classes but only earned one automatic spot into the National Championships as Stephen Loosbrock took second place at 197 pounds to qualify for the fourth time in his career.
Loosbrock entered the qualifier at 30-8 and a NAIA No. 5 ranking. He earned two decision to advance to the championship match as he beat Baker's William Leone with a 9-0 major decision to advance to a semifinal showdown with Missouri Valley's Donavan Fouchey. Fouchey was named first-team All-Heart earlier in the week over Loosbrock, who was named second-team, but Loosbrock took the match up of two of the top three 197-pound wrestlers in the Heart, 3-2.
In the championship match, Loosbrock took on NAIA No. 3 Grant Harrill with Harrill earning a win by fall to take the championship.
Gabe Suthoff narrowly missed on earning an automatic berth in the Nationals at 174 pounds as he took fourth place. After beating Baker's Josh Ortiz 11-6, Suthoff took on Missouri Valley's Riley Boomer in the semifinals. Boomer, who was the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the NAIA at 174 pounds heading into the qualifier, earned a win by fall over Suthoff sending him into the consolation bracket. Suthoff earned a 12-6 decision over Baker's Trevor Sutton to advantage to the third-place match. He fell by fall to Hudson Buck from Dickenson State.
Dillon Scanlan took fifth place at 141 pounds. He fell in the championship semifinals to Marcelo Sierra from Graceland University and then earned a win by fall over Graceland's John Russman to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. He lost by tech-fall to Grand View's Walker Marshall and then rebounded with a major decision in the fifth-place match over Rabian Rodriquez from William Penn University.
Kaleb Mitchel took sixth place for the Ravens at 165 pounds. He lost by fall in the first round of the tournament before earning a major decision over Johny Hooper from William Penn, 11-2, and then beating Austin Roys of Waldorf by fall in his first match of the consolation bracket. He suffered a loss by fall in the consolation semifinals before taking on Connor Middleton of Baker in the fifth-place match. Middleton earned a tech fall over Mitchel to take fifth place.
The NAIA changed the procedure for how at-large berths to the NAIA National Championship are determined with a selection committee making those selections on Monday. Suthoff and Scanlan have still have a chance to join Loosbrock as a Nationals qualifier as both wrestlers were submitted for possible at-large berths by the NAIA Central Region Qualifier.
