WINFIELD – The Raven Cross Country program wrapped up their regular-season competition on Saturday as they traveled to compete in the annual NAIA MidStates Classic hosted by Southwestern College.
The Raven Women were edged out by Wayland Baptist in a tough battle for second and third place as Benedictine scored 80 points to finish in the third. The Raven Men took sixth out of 20.
Lauren Benzing finished in second place out of 166 runners individually in a time of 17:46. For her efforts, Benzing earned her third Heart of America Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week honor. The time moved her into the top spot on the program's all-time performer list as well as the top spot on the all-time performance list.
Lucy Leighton and Elise Buchman were next to finish as they took 10th and 12th respectively. Katherine Ross took 26th, Sydney Moser took 43rd, Paige Case took 51st and Monica Davied placed 54th to round out the Ravens scoring during the meet. In all, the Ravens were among 166 total runners in the event competing on the 5,000 meter course.
The Raven Men were anchored by three top 50 finishers. Joseph Barnes placed 27th, John Danner placed 32nd and Phil Davis placed 49th. Andy Kaiser was just outside of the top 50 finishers in 53rd, while Elijah Green placed 59th, Joseph Lynch placed 63rd, and Andrew Doyle placed 77th. In all there were 189 total runners in the men's 8,000 meter race.
The teams turn their attention to defense of their Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships as this year's annual event will be held Nov. 5 in Swope Park in Kansas City, Mo. The Raven Women are going for their third straight Heart title while the Raven Men are looking to add their second straight banner.
