SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Raven Men's Basketball team connected on 53.6 percent from the floor on Tuesday night to pull away from Evangel University and earned a 89-70 win over the Crusaders.
After leading by eight points at the break, Benedictine (6-0, 4-0 Heart) hit 59.3 percent from the floor in the second half to outscore Evangel (1-4, 1-3 Heart) to earn the 19-point win.
Evangel led from the start of the game building as much as a 12-point lead by the midpoint of the first half. Benedictine answered with a 19-7 run to erase their deficit and pull even with the Crusaders at 28 points with just under five minutes left in the half.
A pair of free throw by Adam Kutney gave Benedictine its first lead of the game as the Ravens continued their run holding to just four points over the remainder of the half to take a 40-32 lead into the break.
Evangel started out the second half much like the first which allowed the Crusaders to to erase their halftime deficit and regain the lead inside the first four minutes of the half.
Kutney gave the Ravens back the lead at 47-46 after a steal by Jake Schannuth with just over 15 minutes left in the game. That basket sent the Ravens on a 16-4 run that gave the Ravens their largest lead at 12 points.
Evangel closed within nine points but couldn't get any closer as Benedictine pulled back ahead by as much as 20 points before earning the 19-point win.
The Ravens outscored the Crusaders 38-20 in the paint and held a 50-34 advantage in bench scoring as Kutney scored a game-high 27 points to lead four Ravens in double figures. Schannuth added 22 points as he accounted for four of the Ravens 11 3-pointers. Nathan Stacy added to the bench-scoring effort as he finished with 11 points while Thomas O'Connor finished with 10 points.
The Ravens remain on the road Saturday with a trip to Parkville, Mo., to take on No. 16 Park University at Noon. They return home for a 7:30 p.m. game on Monday as they host No. 23 Central Methodist University. Monday's game is Student Appreciation Night with events planned to thank the students for the continued support of the program. Monday will also be a Black Out with special shirt being given out before the game. Fans are also encouraged to wear their favorite black Raven gear in support of the team.
