WICHITA – Headed into their second season as a varsity sport, the Raven Women's Lacrosse team was selected as the preseason favorite to repeat as the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference champions.
Benedictine earned 36 points in the Preseason KCAC Coaches' Poll on Monday with six first-place votes.
The Ravens went 9-5 overall last season under heac coach Amanda Magee while winning a share of the KCAC regular season championship and the 2016 KCAC Tournament Championship. With the tournament championship, they earned one of eight spots in the first-ever NAIA Women's Lacrosse Invitational Tournament.
Ottawa was selected second and received the remaining first- place vote. Missouri Valley College followed in third while Clarke University was selected fourth. Midland University, University of St. Mary and Johnson & Wales (Colo.) University rounded out the preseason poll.
The Ravens return the bulk of their scoring punch from last season. Elizabeth Darrow led the team in goals with 30 followed by Caitlyn Chickey with 17 while Mackenzie Roach and Clare Hanson added 14 and 12 goals respectively.
On Tuesday, the NAIA released the Preseason Top 10 Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Poll with the Ravens listed in the others receiving votes category with 16 votes.
Benedictine opens up the season on Feb. 18 in Fulton, Mo., against Westminster College. They play their home opening on Feb. 25 as they host Truett-McConnell College at 1 p.m. at the BC Soccer Complex.
