PERU, Neb. – The Raven Basketball team ran their winning streak to eight games on Saturday with a balanced scoring attack and strong defense.
Benedictine (18-6, 15-5 Heart) finished with seven players scoring nine points or more while limiting Peru State (9-15, 8-12 Heart) on the offensive end en route to a 84-80 win.
The Ravens dominated two big enhanced scoring stats over the Bobcats. Benedictine finished the game with a 17-3 advantage in points off turnovers and a 16-4 advantage in second chance points. The Ravens finished the game with seven turnovers while forcing the Bobcats into nine. In addition to winning the rebound battle 35-25, the Ravens capitalized off their eight offensive rebounds.
Benedictine came out clicking on offense as they used a 17-2 to run to open the game. Peru State didn't break into double figures until there was just under nine minutes left in the half. By that point, Benedictine's lead still was in double digits as the Ravens continue to maintain their strong offensive play.
The Ravens lead by as much of 16 points over the final seven minutes of the first half before taking a 13-point lead, 38-25, into halftime.
Peru State cut Benedictine's lead down to 10 points inside the first two minutes of the second half only to see the Ravens respond with another run – this time a 12-1 run – to pull back ahead by 21 points with 15 minutes left to play.
The Bobcats closed within 11 points twice but couldn't get any closer as the Ravens outscored them 25-12 over the final nine minutes of the game to earn the 24-point win.
Benedictine connected on 59.3 percent from the floor in the second half to finish the game at 50 percent while they knocked in a total of 10 3-pointers to finish the game at 45.5 percent. They also used a 9-of-10 effort at the free throw line in the second half to finish the game at 80 percent.
Connor Fleming led the balanced scoring attack with 15 points. Thomas O'Connor was next with 13, followed by Andre Yates with 12. Adam Kutney, Jake Schannuth and Christian Hatterle all finished with 10 points while AJ Goss added 9 points.
Benedictine returns home for a two-game home stand starting on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. as they host Missouri Valley College. The Vikings took the first meeting of the season back on Jan. 4 77-75 in overtime.
