The Raven Softball team opened up their season at home on Saturday with a doubleheader against Northwestern (Iowa) College on the BC Softball Field inside the Asher Sports Complex.
Benedictine (1-1) took game one, 9-2, before dropping the night cap to Northwestern, 7-1.
Behind a strong pitcher performance inside the circle by Nikki McNeil, the Ravens took game one. McNeil gave up one earned run off five hits over seven innigs with five strikeouts to earn the win.
At the plate, the Ravens recorded 10 hits in support of McNeil, four of which were for extra bases.
Alex Burris, Carney Meade and Molly Chevalier each had a two-hit game at the plate. Burris finished with a triple and RBI while Meade added a double and RBI. Chevalier and Chris Flucke added the two remaining extra base hits with a double each.
In game two, Northwestern broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Game two was eventually called in the top of the seventh due to darkness.
Alex Gilham started inside the circle for the Ravens and gave up five runs off five hits over six and a third innings to suffer the loss. Lauren Berry entered in relief in the sixth but did not record an out as she gave up two runs off two hits with three walks.
At the plate, the Ravens recorded seven hits but could only manage one run. Sarah Methvin connected on Benedictine's first home run of the season in the sixth to plate home the Ravens lone run. Meade and Melanie Braun each recorded a two-hit game in the loss.
The Ravens hit the road this weekend for a tournament hosted by Central Baptist College in Conway Springs, Ark. On Friday, they take on Hannibal-LaGrange at 11:30 a.m. and Central Baptist at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, they take on Bacone College at 11 a.m. and then wrap up the tournament with a 1 p.m. game with the University of St. Mary's
