OSKALOOSA, Iowa – The Raven Softball team needed extra innings to decide their opener over William Penn University on Saturday night, but in the end, they walked away from Penn Field with a sweep over the Statesmen.
Benedictine (15-10, 6-4 Heart) took game one 9-5 in eight inning before earning a 9-0 run-rule win over William Penn (14-15, 2-8 Heart) in game two.
After William Penn scored a run in the seventh to send game one to extra innings, the Ravens used a four-run eighth inning to earn the win.
Alex Gilham earned the start inside the circle for the Ravens, throwing the first five and one-third innings. She gave up three earned runs off seven hits before giving way to Nikki McNeil. McNeil limited the Statesman to just one hit over two and two-thirds innings to earn the win.
Courtney Parker went 1 for 1 with a home run and three runs scored while walking four times in the win. Alex Burris and Lindsey Profitt finished with two hits each while Molly Chevalier added an RBI double.
In game two, McNeil earned the start inside the circle and held the Statesman to just two hits over five innings of work to earn her second win of the day.
After drawing four walks in game one, Parker finished game two 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored. Burris finished with a two RBI single while Sarah Methvin added a two RBI single of her own.
The Ravens are scheduled to host a Heart doubleheader at the BC Softball Field on Tuesday at 1 p.m. against Missouri Valley College but the strom system that has dumped several days worth of rain on Atchison could force another postponement for the program.
