Benedictine College Athletic Director Charlie Gartenmayer has announced the resignation of head wrestling coach Thomas Williams.
"Thomas took over the wrestling program under difficult circumstances," Gartenmayer said. "We thank him for his efforts in during that transition and for building a solid foundation for the Benedictine wrestling program. We want to wish him the best as he pursues a career away from coaching."
Williams joined the staff at Benedictine as a graduate assistant, but was quickly elevated to Interim Head Coach after the departure of Cy Wainwright in November of 2012. He was named the second head coach for Benedictine Wrestling in February of 2013.
Under his leadership, the Ravens garnered individual a team recognition from the NAIA. The program earned its first-ever NAIA All-America honor in 2013 when Joe Hunter was named NAIA All-America. Stephen Loosbrock earned second place at the 2014 NAIA Wrestling National Championships and completed his career as a two-time NAIA All-American. This past season, the program added two more All-America honors as Kevin Kelly and Anthony Orozco were named 2017 NAIA All-Americans bringing the program's total to five All-America selections in its four-year existence. The team also finished inside the Top 25 at Nationals three times.
"I would like to thank Charlie Gartenmayer and President Stephen Minnis for giving me the opportunity to coach the Benedictine College Wrestling Team," Williams said. "When I took over the program I wanted to build 'a team of champions in the classroom and on the mat.'
"I believe that we accomplished that during my time coaching here, and I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to work at such an amazing institution. Go Ravens!"
Academically, the program was recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association in April of 2016 after earning a 3.3068 team GPA to finish second among NAIA programs that season in team GPA. In addition to that team recognition, five Ravens earned eight total Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete honors under Coach Williams
